‘Harry Potter’ blood test makes EMTs feel like wizards

Life imitates art once again in this Harry Potter-inspired rapid blood test that literally spells out a person's blood type on bioactive paper. Engineering associate professor Wei Shen says he got the idea after watching "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets." He explains, "Harry Potter interrogates Tom Riddles' diary by writing on a page of paper in the diary: 'Do you know anything about the Chamber of Secrets?' and the diary responded with a 'Yes' in writing." While the new test is "equipment-free" and could be a huge help in medical emergencies and disaster response situations, it's not science-free -- it still requires mixing blood samples with blood-typing antibodies and waiting for the chemical reaction.
