‘Hunger Games’ guarantees sequel with $155M opening

3/26/2012

There's a new queen in Hollywood and her name is Katniss Everdeen. After months of hype and sold-out midnight screenings, "The Hunger Games" opened to HUGE numbers over the weekend. It raked in $155 million as not just the third biggest opening of all time, behind the last "Harry Potter" and "The Dark Knight," but also as the biggest non-sequel opening ever and biggest opening outside of summer. And for all "Hunger Games" versus "Twilight" sorts, sorry vampire fans, but Katniss and her gang smashed all previous "Twilight" openings -- something that seemed to please "Star Trek" actor George Takei, who tweeted, "The Hunger Games opens to eye-popping numbers. Finally, a girl fighting for her life & justice, not whining over her sparkly vamp boyfriend."
