150 Afghan schoolgirls poisoned, radicals blamed
4/17/2012About 150 schoolgirls in Afghanistan's Takhar Province are ill after they drank contaminated water that officials say they're "100 percent sure" had been poisoned, probably by radicals who are opposed to the education of girls and women. "This is not a natural illness," public health official Haffizullah Safi said of the headaches and vomiting that have left some of the high school girls hospitalized in critical condition. "It's an intentional act to poison schoolgirls."
The upsetting news has been received with shock and dismay on Twitter. One tweeter points out, "150 Afghan schoolgirls poisoned by radicals opposed to female education. And what were you complaining about again?"
