1906 earthquake survivor dies at age 109
2/20/2012Rose Cliver wasn't supposed to live long after her premature birth, says the San Francisco Chronicle, but she endured for more than a century -- even after facing down the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Cliver, who died Saturday at the age of 109, was 3 when her hometown was rocked by the 7.9-magnitude tremor. She told the Chronicle at the 2009 annual commemoration that she and her family climbed Bernal Hill and "watched San Francisco burn."
Even though there are at least four other known survivors with that seismic event etched into their brains, the death of the resilient resident, who enjoyed traveling and playing the slots in her later years, means, as @tonysam2 says, "Another piece of living history gone."
