Someday, 3-D stem cell printers might print out new organs
2/7/2013Three-dimensional printers have been in the news for their almost magical ability to produce just about anything out of thin air, from a moon base to a gun. Now comes word that researchers at the University of Edinburgh have used the same technology to "print" embryonic stem cells. No, the printer does not create life. It just gently dribbles out a solution with stem cells suspended in it. As the science develops, scientists might actually be able to grow human organs from those cells — both outside and inside of a human body. Those sci-fi developments, though, "may be quite far from where we are today," one biomedical engineer said. [Source]
