40K Norwegians sing folk song to annoy killer, show unity
4/26/2012Anders Breivik killed 77 people in a bombing and shooting rampage last summer to protest immigration in Norway. Today, 40,000 Norwegians gathered in Oslo to brave the rain and sing the song "Children of the Rainbow" together, a Norwegian version of Pete Seeger's "My Rainbow Race." The singing started as an event on Facebook meant to annoy Breivik, who specifically derided the song. But as the crowd grew, an effort to irritate a hated criminal became a demonstration of love, hope and unity. The video shows crowds of Norwegians holding roses aloft despite raindrops and singing the song, whose lyrics include, "Every sister and every brother shall live together like small children of the rainbow." Pete Seeger said of the event, "It's a tremendous honor, really."
