60-million-year-old turtle fossil is the size of a Smart Car

5/21/2012

They found a really, really big turtle fossil in Colombia, and it's as big as a Smart Car. Its head was as big as a football, and its shell could have been wading pool. It roamed the Earth 60 million years ago, feasting on whatever it wanted, including the doomed critter in the artist's rendering above. If you had been around back then, it probably would have eaten you. Conversely, if it was around now, it would have to pay hundreds of dollars in parking fees, and where is it going to get money like that?
