99-year-old woman denied credit because she was too young

8/14/2012

Madeleine Otto is not one to pass on a deal. So when the 99-year-old Florida woman was offered a $10 discount at a department store if she signed up for a credit card, she agreed. Then came the bad news: She was denied because of her age. Otto, who turns 100 in October, was stunned. Even more surprisingly, it turned out, Otto was rejected for being too young. A computer program wrongly registered her birth year as 2012 instead of 1912, making her technically unborn, and thus, a credit liability. When the error was discovered, the store apologized and gave Otto a $50 gift certificate. [Source]
