Middle class tops list of charitable givers (far above the rich)

8/22/2012

Hey, middle class: You may not be living in a mansion or driving a fast car, but here's something you can be proud of. According to a new study by the Chronicle of Philanthropy, folks earning annual household incomes between $50,000 and $75,000 gave away a totally respectable 7.6 percent of their discretionary incomes to charity. But wealthier households bringing in more than $100,000 only donated 4.2 percent. Further number-crunching revealed that where we live influences what we give: Super-rich fat cats earning over $200,000 and living in mega-affluent communities were the stingiest givers, only donating a measly 2.8 percent, while those living in economically diverse areas gave more generously. Smile and keep on giving. [Source]
