Cross-shaped flower bed loses its arms in church-state ruling

8/9/2012

A cross-shaped flower bed has been significantly altered – into the least contentious shape of them all, a rectangle – following concerns raised by "citizens not of the Christian faith," according to Columbus, Ga., mayor Teresa Tomlinson. While some townspeople supported the cross-shaped garden, Tomlinson said the change had to happen — in part, as a result of criticism from members of the military associated with nearby Fort Benning: "We’ve had a lot of those individuals come forward talking about the fact that a lot of blood has been shed to make certain that our public institutions are open to people of all faiths, of all races, of all genders," Tomlinson told Fox News.
