Ornery judge orders massive fee hikes for Burning Man

8/19/2012

Burning Man organizers are peeved over one ornery judge's attempts to drive the huge experimental arts festival out of its yearly pop-up colony in Black Rock, Nevada. 2012 Burning Man event organizers have paid $154,000 in fees to Pershing County (a nice chunk of change for renting arid land in a recession), but for the 2013 event, a judge is raising the fees to $448,000 for the same permits. Burning Man reps claim the increased fees have less to do with costs and more to do with censoring the unique festival. We sincerely hope the festival's fees overturned in court, and to that end suggest no one wears face paint or nylon butterfly wings while it's in session. [Source]
