Ballots marked with an XX as record number of female senators elected
11/7/2012Yesterday's election set new records for voter turnout and retweets, and it set a new mark in the Senate as well. A record 19 female senators will serve in the 113th Congress, besting the current high mark of 17. One Republican and three Democrats will be Senate freshmen, while six Democrats won re-election (and Heidi Heitcamp's race remains too close to call in North Dakota). This year, "roughly half" of the 33 Senate races featured a female candidate but perhaps the most unbelievable part is that Congress will have not one but TWO women named Tammy: Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., America's first openly gay senator and, in the House, Rep.Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., a double amputee Iraq war veteran.
