'Pastafarian' demands to wear pasta strainer on head for license photo

2/21/2013

There are the devout, and there are the cray Jonestown dudes you avoid eye contact with on the subway. Aaron Williams is most definitely the latter. The New Jersey man recently got into a tiff with the folks at his local DMV over his religious beliefs. The 25-year-old is a "Pastafarian" (a follower of the Church of the Flying Spaghettic Monster, which opposes teaching creationism and intelligent design in schools), and thus, wanted to wear a pasta strainer on his head for his driver’s license photo. He was told head coverings could be worn only for religious reasons, which he did not take well. Police were eventually called, and Williams reluctantly took his photo sans strainer. Poor guy. (Niko Alm of Austria, above, was able to get away with it in 2011.) [Source]

Should he have been allowed to wear the strainer?
