What is ‘Biggest Movers’?

Biggest Movers are keywords that are trending in real-time and are updated every five minutes. They’re determined by a trend algorithm, displayed automatically, and aren’t filtered. Sometimes hoaxes, rumors, and false information trend on the Internet. Biggest Movers will show this information because it is trending—it doesn’t identify it or filter it out. 

What does ‘Analyzing searches and social updates’ mean?

People are constantly searching, sharing, tweeting, and posting content. Every few minutes, msnNOW counts, sorts, and analyzes millions of Bing searches and social updates from the previous 24 hours.

After sifting through this data (and tossing out the lame and boring stuff), our advanced technology detects patterns so that real-time breaking trends emerge. Because of this you'll find stories on msnNOW that you won’t find anywhere else.

We also cover the big stories, but with a unique social angle. This new blend of algorithms and editorial is the perfect way to find the stories that matter right now.

What is the Dashboard?

If you follow Biggest Movers, check out more ways to track trends in the Dashboard. To start, we’ve chosen six trend lists, each determined by different criteria. From there, you can customize up to 48 combinations of trend data by choosing social or search sources, how the trends are calculated, and whether you want to see search keywords or shared links.

As with Biggest Movers, the trends in the Dashboard are determined by algorithms and displayed automatically. So, hoaxes, rumors, and false information aren’t filtered out.

What do the Dashboard trend types mean?

Dashboard trend types include three different algorithms (methods of calculating results) that find topics from searches and social network posts based on how recently they’ve occurred, and the number of mentions or search keywords.

Biggest Movers: Finds topic trends as they are breaking.

Trending Now: Ranks current topic trends by their timeliness.

Most Popular: Ranks topics people are searching for and sharing the most.
