ACLU files a lawsuit on behalf of noted civic leaders the KKK
9/14/2012The ACLU is suing the state of Georgia on behalf of the KKK, so it looks like we'll find out if they have courtroom-appropriate robes. The Klan's klaim, um, claim is that their First Amendment rights were violated when Georgia wouldn't let them into the Adopt-A-Highway program. When Harley Hanson, the ridiculously titled Grand Cyclops, filed the group's request in May, they were swiftly denied. "A state road sign with 'KKK' on it would … rightly offend the vast majority of Georgians," the governor's spokesman said. Trashy as they are, the KKK will probably win; In 2000, they were awarded a stretch of highway in Missouri after a similar lawsuit. The court held that "the First Amendment protects everyone, even those with viewpoints as thoroughly obnoxious as those of the Klan." [Source]
