That bronze medal is actually worth less than a Frappuccino
7/30/2012If swimmer Brendan Hansen is short on cash during his next Starbucks visit, he could trade his bronze medal for a Grande Skinny Mocha, but he'd probably STILL owe them a dollar or two. The medals the winners are earning in London are the biggest ever — weighing up to 14 ounces each — but the actual value of the materials is less than you'd think. The bronze that Hansen slipped around his neck last night is worth $4.70, while the raw materials in the gold and the silver are worth $644 and $330, respectively. That's an interesting bit of trivia you can share with whoever's sitting beside you on the sofa, but for the athletes, we know those medals are priceless. [Source]
