Crazy-cute, once-extinct sand kittens born in Israel

8/19/2012

We thought all desert animals were scaly or eight-legged or both, but these four adorable sand kittens also live in the Sahara and Arabian deserts (and they bear a striking resemblance to that "hang in there" kitten of cheesy-poster fame). Jerusalem Zoo had tried previously to reintroduce sand cats, a species that went extinct in Israel, by breeding them and then releasing them into the wild in 2010. Sadly, though, the animals did not survive that transition. Now these four sand kittens, born in Tel Aviv from parents given to Israel by Poland and Germany, represent the return of the species. Hurray. [Source]
