No one laughs at Air New Zealand's testicle joke about female athlete
12/3/2012Some advertisements try to grab our attention with ballsy messages, but Air New Zealand has likely gone too far. An online Christmas-themed competition on the airline's Grabaseat website featured a joke that outraged customers and shook up the Twitterverse by insinuating a female Olympian is really a man: "What large heavy ball was responsible for Valerie Adams' gold medal? The Belarusian's left testicle." Background: Belarusian athlete Nadzeya Ostapchuk won the women's shotput competition at the summer Olympics but had to relinquish it to Valerie Adams of New Zealand after failing a drug test. Cue the Twitter outcry, summed up in this tweet: "unbelievably offensive … transphobic, and just plain unnecessary." [Source]
