Drunker people may be more likely to survive a traumatic accident

11/21/2012

It’s a potentially fatal Catch-22 — alcohol increases your risk of injury, but having alcohol in your body can help you survive a serious injury. Researchers at the University of Illinois-Chicago stress they are not encouraging folks to get drunk and jump off a roof into a pool, but they found that the more booze you have in your system when you suffer a traumatic injury the more the alcohol has a "protective effect." The team studied nearly 200,000 alcohol-related traumatic injuries in Illinois from 1995-2009, and found that cases with higher levels of blood alcohol content saw a 50 percent reduction in mortality rates.
