Former race car champ Alex Zanardi wins gold at Paralympics9/5/2012
In one of the more moving stories in a competition filled with them, former race car driver Alex Zanardi won a gold medal today in paracycling at the Paralympics. Zanardi, a former CART racing champion, was nearly killed in a horrific crash in 2001 that left him in a coma and resulted in both his legs being amputated. Zanardi, 45, battled back, learning to use prosthetic legs and even returning to auto racing. He took up paracycling (which uses a hand cycle powered by arms) in 2007 to stay in shape. Zanardi also had another motivation: Former teammate Jimmy Vasser promised him a car for the Indianapolis 500 if he won gold. [Source]
