Englishman awakes from coma and discovers he can only speak Welsh

12/30/2012

An Englishman who spent three weeks in a coma following a stroke awoke to find that he had somehow acquired the gift of a new language — and lost his mother tongue. After Alun Morgan, 81, regained consciousness, the native English speaker found he could only communicate in Welsh. Morgan did spend time in Wales as a child after he was evacuated from England in World War II, but he had not been there since. Luckily, his wife speaks Welsh fluently. Joe Korner of the Stroke Association, who is helping Morgan with his rehabilitation, said the condition, a type of aphasia, is rare. Morgan has since been able to remember English words, but sadly, is forgetting most of his Welsh again. [Source]
