What new pope? Americans seem to be losing their religion

3/14/2013

Catholic cardinals just elected a new pope, but there's a good chance lots of Americans couldn't care less. Americans are the least religious they’ve ever been — well, at least since the 1930s, when the General Social Survey began conducting its biannual poll. Its latest survey found that 20 percent of Americans say they don’t have a religious affiliation, though only three percent called themselves atheists. 40 percent of liberals claim they have no religion compared to just nine percent of conservatives. Men are more likely than women not to have a religious affiliation, while young folks ages 18-24 are more likely than folks 75 and older to have no religion. [Source]
