America's national phallic symbol is drooping

3/15/2012

Is the Washington Monument sinking? The earthquake that shook the mid-Atlantic coast last August may have caused the 555-foot tower to sink a millimeter, and natural settling may be responsible for another millimeter. Two millimeters may not seem like much, but what if it were your obelisk instead of Washington's? The tower has been closed since sustaining damage in the quake, and is soon to be surveyed to assess the sinking problem. Come see the monument this cherry blossom season before it turns into our own Leaning Tower of Pisa.
