Android users, beware evil Russian Instagram malware
4/20/2012Savvy Russian cybercriminals are capitalizing on Instagram's success and targeting latecomers who are just now jumping on the bandwagon and downloading the app at a rate of up to 5 million downloads per week. The scheming Russian brainiacs have created Instagram look-alike malware that targets Androids, and hapless users are downloading the fake app instead of the real thing. The malware sends background SMS messages from users' phones to premium-rate numbers to earn cash for its makers. Could these guys be in cahoots with all those Instagram-loving, Android-hating iPhone users? Folks who tweet from their iPhone are basking in virtually hack-free glory and loving their iPhones even more than they did before.
