Diversity officer put on leave for signing anti-gay marriage petition

10/11/2012

If you are the chief diversity officer at a university, you should probably be careful about the things you attach your name to. For instance, an anti-same sex marriage petition might get you some backlash. Administrators at Gallaudet University in Washington placed Dr. Angela McCaskill on administrative leave after learning she had signed a petition at her church in favor of reversing Maryland’s same-sex marriage law. The president of the university, which is a school for deaf and hearing-impaired education, said McCaskill’s act “is inappropriate for an individual serving as Chief Diversity Officer.” Voters in Maryland will decide Nov. 6 whether to reverse a state law passed earlier this year that made same-sex marriage legal.
