Anonymous bidder forks over $2.8 million for an old camera

5/15/2012

A 1923 camera may look like just some old camera to the untrained eye, but to one wealthy photophile, it looked like a good reason to cough up 2.16 million euros (or $2.8 million), including the buyer's premium, at an auction in Vienna over the weekend. The camera, which still works and is one of only 25 Leica 0-Series camera prototypes made in 1923, two years before they were more widely produced, is extremely rare. Only half of those initial 25 are still around. The sale set a new world record for most expensive camera. Hope the film's not just as pricey.
