A really cold war has USA and Russia battling ... to study water

1/15/2013

Russian researchers in Antarctica are closing in on a huge scientific find: a "buried lake" two miles below the surface of the planet. They're hoping that water samples from underground Lake Vostok -- which scientists believe "hasn't been touched for more than 14 million years" -- will provide clues to primitive forms of life. The Russians reached the lake from a camp at the "coldest place on Earth," where winter temperatures once reached -128.6 Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, an American group is examining Lake Whillans, but Team U.S.A.'s lake is only 2,500 feet below ground. [Source]
