This candlestick with 'Mammy' in it is racist, but also really ugly
1/12/2013It might be offensive enough for some people that twee-chic retailer Anthropologie stocks candlesticks that cost $400. (And that's per candlestick, people, not per pair.) But it's much, much worse when you realize that the candlestick in question — one version of the $398 "Trinket & Treasure Candlestick" — features a "Mammy" character among the other stereotyped figurines featured in the design. Did the designers at Anthro ditch all their American history lectures ever? After a photo of the product and a critical essay were posted online, the complaints went viral, and we're wondering if Anthropologie even sold a single one of these before the items were pulled from the catalogue on Friday.
