A new law designed to protect people against fraudulent claims of sorcery and witchcraft is causing controversy in Indonesia. At least one politician is concerned it might harm actual witches. Great Indonesia Movement Party politician Permadi (one name, like Cher or Bono), who says he has psychic powers, argues the measure "fails to protect the rights of psychics and witches," and that "not all people who could perform magic and cast a spell on someone use their power wrongly." That seems logical, right? "If you want to make this law perfect," he added, "you should involve people who understand witchcraft," which might be the one thing we've heard this week that makes us feel better about our own political representatives.
