What's the deal with Justice Scalia's weird hat?

1/21/2013

Justice Scalia was the talk of Washington D.C. after the inauguration ceremony Monday morning. Or rather, his hat was. Scalia exercised his right to wear the traditional ceremonial headgear of a Supreme Court justice: a skullcap with peaked corners. He did the same thing when Obama took his first oath of office in 2009, when he also set tongues wagging. Sen. Claire McCaskill was even inspired to snap a Twitter picture of Antonin’s bold look, also showing off the fashion choices of other Supreme Court justices. (Samuel Alito was wearing some pretty snazzy shades, and Anthony Kennedy had on a stocking cap.) We think it's fair to assume that Scalia’s millineriffic style will not be lighting up the runways in Paris or Milan this Spring, since it makes him look like a grumpy cardinal from a thousand years ago.
