Heading to Aspen? Set your cruise control for 14 mph

1/31/2013

If you're heading to Aspen, Colo., make sure you leave your lead foot at home. The city council has approved a plan to reduce a neighborhood speed limit to a brisk, and very specific, 14 mph. The plan is to enact the new speed limit in the town's West End as a way to discourage travelers from using the neighborhood to avoid congestion on nearby Highway 82. City officials hope the unique number will get drivers' attention. Despite a speeding review that showed drivers weren't exceeding 25 mph in the area, residents have still complained about a perceived problem of speeding. A city engineer estimated that 60 new speed limit signs would cost the city $27,000. [Source]
