Scientists spread holiday cheer with news a huge asteroid isn't coming

12/24/2012

Give the nearest person a high five, because the human race has avoided two apocalypses in one weekend. Fresh from beating the Mayan prophecy jinx, University of Hawaii at Manoa astronomers have now calculated that a huge asteroid headed in our direction will NOT hit the Earth in 2040. Phew. According to the space nerds, the asteroid — called 2011 AG5 — has an orbital trajectory that will miss the planet by 550,000 miles, which is more than twice the Earth-moon distance. Everyone on Earth should be happy, but we wonder whether Bruce Willis is disappointed at not being able to play Armageddon for real. [Source]
