School district tells atheist group to STFU about kids' songs
8/15/2012
The Shenendehowa (NY) Central School district is standing up to threats from an atheist organization that wants to ban elementary schoolers from singing songs that have "God" or "Lord" in the lyrics. The Freedom From Religion Foundation started writing letters threatening a lawsuit after parents complained when a child came home singing verses from the songs, which include standards like "Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore" and "Thank You For the World So Sweet." Despite the stack of FFRF-logo envelopes on the superintendent's desk, the district isn't budging. "None of the songs was taught or used as prayer," attorney Kathryn McCary said. "[The songs] were used appropriately to teach musical concepts." [Source]
