Atlantic apologizes for Scientology ad, but not before an Onion skewer

1/16/2013

The Atlantic posted a sponsored story that praised Scientology and its leader David Miscavige, but the item was quickly pulled after criticism began pouring in saying it looked like regular editorial content. The post, titled "David Miscavige Leads Scientology to Milestone Year" was labeled as "sponsor content," but after removing the item, the Atlantic's communications director Natalie Raabe released a statement saying, "We screwed up." Despite the mea culpa, satire site The Onion jumped on the moment and posting its take on the debacle with a fake "sponsored link" touting "The Taliban Is a Vibrant and Thriving Political Movement." The Onion brings tears to our eyes. [Source]
