Banks continue quest to keep you broke with higher ATM fees

9/24/2012

Well, this is exactly what we need in this crappy economy. A report issued Monday shows banks are raising their ATM fees to record highs, as well as eliminating free checking at disconcerting rates. Data from the research firm Bankrate.com show that combined ATM fees and surcharges have hit a whopping average of $4.07 ($1.57 and $2.50, respectively), meaning it now costs you the price of two lattes just to get the money out to buy one. And that's not all. The incidence of free checking accounts has plummeted to a mere 39 percent, down from 76 percent in 2009, when it was relatively easy thing to come by. Awesome, another reason to feel broke. [Source]
