Attention, criminals: Town's two cops can't own guns
6/29/2012On the "aw, shucks" classic "Andy Griffith Show," officer Barney Fife was allowed to carry only one bullet -- in his pocket. (Kids, ask your parents about it, then Bing "what is a black and white TV?"). The two cops on the Vaughn, N.M., police force don't get guns OR bullets because they both have criminal records. Chief Ernest "Chris" Armijo had to empty his holster after being indicted for nonpayment of child support. Deputy Brian Bernal -- who isn't even a certified officer yet -- can't own a gun due to a domestic violence conviction. "This isn't a TV show. This is life," Armijo said. "We don't run in every day with a gun drawn." Well, obviously.
Should a criminal record keep you off the police force?
