School denies autistic kindergartner $2 lunch over outstanding bill

9/15/2012

The parents of an autistic kindergartner in New Jersey claim his school denied him a $2 lunch because his school meal plan payment was a few days overdue. John Robert Caravella was sent home with a note that said, "John Robert was not able to get lunch today he ate his muffins. There is an issue with an outstanding bill." Caravella's mother, Silvia, admitted that there was some confusion over the payment plan with her husband, but the bill for four days of meals on the school's plan comes to about $8. Caravella said she quickly added money to her son's account online, but couldn't understand the school's actions, saying, "Where is the human decency factor?" [Source]
