Europe debating if moms can leave an unwanted baby in box at hospital

11/25/2012

It seems Europe has just discovered that despite all the castles everywhere, it is no longer 1567 and is considering banning foundling wheels. OK, we're kidding Europe doesn’t still have any operational foundling wheels; but it does, according to a recent UN report, have at least 11 countries with "baby boxes," contraptions which allow a mom to drop her newborn into a warm hatch at the hospital, ding a bell (well actually, it dings automatically), and head on her way. Now, before you call the concept medieval, note the US has "safe haven" laws in all 50 states, which let parents give up their babies at secure locations. The idea of the boxes is to lower infanticide; however, the UN says it encourages abandonment and is now pushing for a parliamentary ban. [Source]
