Doctors take drastic step of 'freezing' baby to save his life

Cryonics is not yet a workable option for those at the end of their lives, but some cool work by the doctors at University College London Hospital has allowed Edward Ives a healthy start to his. Claire Ives discovered late in her pregnancy that her baby had an extremely fast heartbeat, so a C-section brought Edward into the world five weeks premature. Unable to regulate the heart with medication or shock, doctors twice lowered the baby's body temperature to 91 degrees to preserve its organs while slowing the heart rate. "There had been so many times we thought he'd never come home," Claire said of her baby, now 6 months old and a happy picture of health.
