Baby walrus spared from Sandy's wrath thanks to awesome humans

10/31/2012

Mitik, a 236-pound baby walrus, is one of the newest inhabitants of the New York Aquarium at Coney Island — one of the areas hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy. Although all 14 acres of Coney Island flooded when Sandy made landfall on Monday night, the aquarium's dedicated (and awesome) employees stayed onsite all night to care for orphaned Mitik, who's experienced some health issues since his arrival. "We have been monitoring his condition carefully since his arrival and continued this around-the-clock care throughout the duration of the storm," said the aquarium's executive vice-president Jim Breheny.
