New report blames Bayer insecticides for drop in bee numbers
1/17/2013The European Food Safety Authority has thrown a metaphorical chair in the all-in brawl between government bodies, corporations and environmentalists over declining bee populations. The EFSA has concluded that the world's most commonly used neonicotinoid insecticides pose an "unacceptable" threat to bees, which play a critical role in pollinating one-third of the world's food. The EFSA's condemnation is being viewed as a major win for environmentalists seeking a ban on the products. Bayer responded by saying the claims are exaggerated and an industry body has argued that a proposed ban would cost farmers almost $1 billion in lost food production. [Source]
