Be careful what you pin, or you might be breaking the law

2/18/2012

Pinterest, the latest darling of the Internet, *might* be breaking the law, according to Business Insider. Users of the fastest growing website freely pin copyrighted material, such as photographs, to their pinboards without the artists' permission. Pinterest then stores a full-size image on its servers. Pinners should be giving credit to the artists with a link back to their site, but that doesn't always happen and even if it does, it doesn't satisfy copyright law. Pinterest's terms of use says users shouldn't pin photos they don't own the rights to, but this is generally ignored. So all those images of puppies and kitchens you've been adding could be illegal, but only time will tell if anyone decides to challenge Pinterest.
