Relax, you can drink that beer you find in the post-nuclear apocalypse

9/20/2012

So you manage to survive a nuclear blast and stumble across a six-pack — can you drink it? Fear not, nation, your government thoughtfully looked into this confronting scenario in a 1957 test study "The Effect of Nuclear Explosions on Commercially Packaged Beverages." The Atomic Energy Commission exploded two nuclear bombs, placing bottles and cans of soft drink and beer at various distances from ground zero. Many of the cans and some of the bottles survived the blast. Radiation-wise, even the contents of vessels closest to ground zero were "well within the permissible limits of emergency use." Needing a beer after an A-bomb sure sounds like an emergency to us and even if there is a "slight flavor change" in the blasted beer, we'll be chugging it straight down. Here's to your health!
