Believers camp in France to await alien doomsday rescue
3/25/2012For believers who are convinced the world is going to end in nine months and also enjoy camping in France, this might be the perfect group. More than 200 New Agers have set up trailers and yurts in the village below the Pic de Bugarach, a French "upside down" mountain (meaning the top layers are millions of years older than the bottom ones) that they believe is "un garage à ovnis"-- an alien garage. On the expected apocalypse date of December 21, 2012, when the world presumably ends, believers expect aliens waiting in the peak will emerge, pile anyone nearby into their spacecraft and take off for the heavens. While the French army worries about possible mass suicide and locals roll their eyes, the New Agers aren't the first group to assign significance to this peak: It's long rumored the summit was the site of excavations by the Nazis and later by Israel's Mossad.
