Bill that could make WTF illegal has critics saying OMG
4/3/2012If you want to post an all-caps comment telling someone they're an idiot, you'd better get your trollface on soon, especially in Arizona. House Bill 2549 is awaiting the governor's signature and could, according to Gizmodo, "make naughty, angry words a Class 1 misdemeanor -- or worse." The bill, an update to the state's existing telecommunications regulations, has been proposed largely to prevent online bullying (and would make e-stalking a felony), but critics say it's unconstitutional. "While protecting people from harassment is a worthy goal, legislators cannot do so by criminalizing speech protected by the Constitution," Media Coalition wrote in a letter to Gov. Jan Brewer. Oddly enough, that post doesn't allow comments.
Do online comments need regulation?
