Nonsensically peeled, re-packaged bananas spark Facebook blitz9/25/2012
An overly helpful Austrian supermarket chain overestimated the laziness of its shoppers when it introduced ready-peeled bananas, packaged in plastic and foil, at its shops advertised as "common sense" grocery stores. Environmentally conscious customers went bananas, bombing German-owned Billa supermarkets' now-disabled Facebook page with vitriol and threatening to boycott. In recycling-happy, composting-loving Austria, it was tantamount to slipping on a giant PR banana peel, with one Facebook poster saying replacing nature's perfect packaging with plastic was "the ultimate symbol of waste and the throw-away society," according to the Austrian Times. "If there is an easy to open ready packed food it's the banana" said a Greenpeace spokesman. "Peeling it only to pack it in environmentally unfriendly plastic is just madness." [Source]
