Shelters keep black cats for Halloween, fearing torture, sacrifice

10/25/2012

In the lead-up to Halloween, some cat rescue groups have placed a moratorium on releasing black kitties into the bewildering wilds of humanity over fears for their safety. People "do horrible things to cats, especially black cats, this month; I mean ritual torture and killing," claimed Lynda Garibaldi of Cat's Cradle, N.C., in a press release. Margaret Baker, of The Animal Orphanage, in Old Town, Maine, concurs. "People use them for sacrificing," she said. The Humane Society disagrees, saying there's no evidence of feline sacrifice and that talking to potential adopters to gauge their suitability is sufficient. So if you are set on adopting a black cat before October 31, be sure and hide those cloven hoofs and pentagram tattoos. [Source]
