You have to pay for the grapes, but the black widow is free

11/17/2012

A Massachusetts woman got more than she bargained for when she brought home a bag of grapes from a supermarket in Yarmouth: Included with them, she says, was a black widow spider. Laurie Kaiser didn't even notice the spider until a week after she tossed the grapes into the fridge. (This makes us wonder if the grapes really were the culprit here, but we'll take her at her word.) Kaiser was about to scoot the spider into her yard when she noticed its distinctive red-hourglass markings, identifying it as a venomous black widow. For her trouble, Kaiser received a refund from the supermarket for the cost of the grapes. [Source]
