Bogus tweet trips up TV station on Ray Allen signing
7/6/2012NBA free agency is a frenzy of rumors and wishful thinking — and media pratfalls. Miami's WSVN-TV giddily delivered a "news alert" that the Heat had landed Ray Allen, citing a Yahoo! report that the Celtics sharpshooter had agreed to a 3-year, $11 million deal. Except there was no such report, unless you count a bogus Twitter account carrying the name of Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski that has just that single tweet and all of five followers. Worse yet, the bum tweet said the contract was for $9 million. So the station couldn't even piggyback off a phony scoop accurately. An apology was issued — via Twitter, of course. At least it was a legit account.
Should reporters use Twitter as a source?
