'Bottle rocket' cigarette explodes from man's mouth

2/17/2012

A Florida man trying to break his smoking habit by puffing an electronic cigarette lost two front teeth and part of his tongue when the device exploded. Besides his injuries, the unidentified smoker saw his home office extensively damaged. "The best analogy is like it was trying to hold a bottle rocket in your mouth when it went off," said Joseph Parker, of Pensacola's North Bay Fire Department. "The battery flew out of the tube and set the closet on fire."
Thomas Kiklas, co-founder of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association, said there has never before been a similar problem with chemical cigarettes. If there is a TVECA Hall of Fame, this device should be enshrined as the most faulty and most effective electronic cigarette ever.
